FANTASY

The author is many things: outdoorsman, husband, nature-lover, father, pastor, grandfather, poet, great-grandfather, gardener, US Air Force veteran, computer programmer, and writer. Living quietly in Ohio, USA, he dreams of becoming an author, hoping to turn fictional writing into a third career to keep him busy until he actually retires…or the zombie apocalypse happens…whichever comes first.

I strive to tell a good story that everyone can enjoy – without graphic violence and explicit sexual content. Something relatable that engenders deep emotion; peril, love, tragedy, triumph, and just a touch of silly to keep it from getting too serious.

I have always loved reading in both the fantasy and sci-fi genres. A number of authors and their works have had an influence over my writing, but here are the top three.

J.R.R. Tolkien

“The Hobbit”,
“The Lord of the Rings”

Really needs no explanation. The undisputed master of immersive fantasy and exquisitely detailed world-building. A modern pioneer of the genre. His works are an absolute must-read for every fantasy reader to cut their teeth on.

Frank Herbert

“Dune”

Besides being an amazing treatise on planetary ecology, it is a fascinating story full of clashing cultures, technology, human evolution, and political intrigue. How does he solve traveling between planets light-years apart? Folding space using your mind. Wow! I found his use of quotations at the beginning of chapters to fill in background information was a clever approach to storytelling.

Ray Bradbury

“Something Wicked
this Way Comes”,
“Martian Chronicles”
and other short stories

His stories have a magical ambiance, and he weaves in philosophy about life and death, quoting Shakespeare. He has a masterful use of simile and metaphor, and his words are written so carefully and so deliberately that it seems a crime not to savor each one.
